JNC Invites Comments from the Bench, Bar and Public on the Qualifications of Chief Judge Eric T. Washington for Redesignation as Chief Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals

All comments must be received by no later than May 30, 2013.

Members of the bench, bar, and public are hereby notified by the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (the “Commission”) that Chief Judge Eric T. Washington is the sole candidate for redesignation as Chief Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Chief Judge Washington has submitted a Statement of Interest [PDF] in support of his request for redesignation as Chief Judge to a four-year term commencing August 5, 2013. The statement is also available on the Commission’s website at jnc.dc.gov or a hard copy is available by contacting the Commission office at (202) 879-0478.  

The Commission invites comments on the qualifications of Chief Judge Washington. He can be evaluated with respect to six categories:

  1. Leadership and Communication Skills (e.g., ability to lead the Superior Court and to promote a sense of cooperation among the judges, the Court staff, other governmental and non-governmental entities, and the community; ability to inspire respect, promote confidence in the Court system and advocate for the Court; creativity, foresight, and intellectual ability; ability to communicate clearly and succinctly; and willingness to listen with patience and courtesy);
  2. Court Administration (e.g., analytical skills; understands the use of technology needed to improve Court operations; demonstrated financial and fiscal knowledge and abilities; record of managerial and administrative achievements; and decisiveness);
  3. Judicial Temperament (e.g., ability to treat everyone with respect; willingness to listen with patience and courtesy; and ability to promote collegiality);
  4. Ethics (e.g., shows integrity; impartiality; objectivity; sound judgment; and restraint);
  5. Commitment to Diversity (e.g., treats people equally, fairly and with respect regardless of gender, race, economic status, sexual orientation or any other factor; promotes inclusiveness of women and minorities); and
  6. Efficiency/Organizational Skills (e.g., understands the Court’s challenges; resourceful under time constraints; ability to work constructively with others; and ability to manage time and resources).

The Commission has created a web-based Applicant Evaluation Form to facilitate the opportunity to provide comments on the applicants' qualifications. Comments also can be submitted by visiting the Commission’s website at jnc.dc.gov.  All comments must be received by no later than May 30, 2013. Comments submitted to the Commission are confidential and will not be released to the public or to Chief Judge Washington. Any comments discussed with Chief Judge Washington will be discussed without revealing the source of such comment, absent written consent by the individual providing the comment. Comments also can be submitted by visiting the Commission’s website at jnc.dc.gov. All comments must be received by no later than May 30, 2013.

Comments submitted to the Commission are confidential and will not be released to the public or to Chief Judge Washington. Any comments discussed with Chief Judge Washington will be discussed without revealing the source of such comment, absent written consent by the individual providing the comment.
