Caroline S. Van Zile, Esq.

Caroline S. Van Zile, Esq., is the Solicitor General for the District of Columbia. She oversees appellate litigation for the District government in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. She has supervised over 1,500 cases. Her practice covers all aspects of District law, including consumer protection, constitutional law, civil rights, employment law, tax, criminal law, and administrative law. Before joining the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, Ms. Van Zile was a litigator with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. She devoted a substantial part of her practice to pro bono work. 

Ms. Van Zile is a member of the American Law Institute and the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court. She enjoys volunteering for The Appellate Project, the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, and Spark the Journey. 

Ms. Van Zile earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University, her Master of Science in Teaching Secondary English from PACE University, and her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. After law school, she clerked for then-Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Chief Judge James E. Boasberg on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy on the Supreme Court of the United States.
