He received a BA degree from the George Washington University (GWU) in 1989, where he graduated summa cum laude, and he received his JD, with high honors, from the GWU National Law Center in 1992. As part of his law school's clinical programs, he assisted individuals seeking political asylum from Ethiopia, and was then awarded a public interest fellowship to assist District residents applying for asylum from Central America.

Mr. Lederstein began his career as an associate with small general practice law firms, representing individuals and small organizations over a wide range of matters, such as personal injury, contracts, domestic relations, and criminal defense. Mr. Lederstein also handled arbitrations for the Washington Teachers' Union.

In 2002, Mr. Lederstein joined the Child Protection Section of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), where he litigated child abuse and neglect cases for the next eight years. During that time, Mr. Lederstein was appointed by the DC Court of Appeals to its Committee on Admissions, where he served two years grading bar exams, and evaluating the fitness of bar applicants. In 2010, Mr. Lederstein moved to OAG's Legal Counsel Division, where he provided legal advice to the District's executive agencies, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and OAG senior staff. Since 2013, Mr. Lederstein has worked in OAG's Office of the Solicitor General, representing the District in civil and administrative appeals.

Mr. Lederstein has lived in Columbia Heights since 1990.
