Julie Ciamporcero Avetta

Julie Ciamporcero Avetta, Esq., is an appellate attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, where she litigates complex statutory matters. Ms. Avetta joined the DOJ in 2007 and served for seven years as a trial attorney in the Tax Division before moving to the Division's Appellate Section in 2014. Since then, Ms. Avetta has been lead counsel on more than 60 appellate briefs in federal tax, bankruptcy, False Claims Act, and Bank Secrecy Act matters and has briefed, argued, and won cases in all 13 circuits of the U.S. Courts of Appeals.

Ms. Avetta has also served as Counsel to the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Appellate and Review, as an attorney mentor, trainer, speaker, and member of the Tax Division’s Diversity Committee. She has earned multiple Outstanding Attorney and Special Commendation awards for her work on some of the Division's most significant cases.

Before joining the DOJ, Ms. Avetta clerked for the Honorable Scott Kafker on the Massachusetts Appeals Court. Ms. Avetta graduated with honors from Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review. She is also a classically trained soprano often heard performing the National Anthem at public events, including for Major League Baseball, where she was a member of the on-field chorus at the 2018 All-Star Game.
