Sean C. Staples

Hon. Sean C. Staples is a Magistrate Judge assigned to the Criminal and Domestic Violence Divisions on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Judge Staples previously worked in Family Court presiding over an abuse and neglect calendar.

Before his appointment, Judge Staples was GAL Project Director at the Children’s Law Center (CLC). Prior to his work at the CLC, Judge Staples was a clinical professor in the Criminal Division of the D.C. Law Students in Court Program. Judge Staples taught criminal trial practice and procedure and supervised law students in the representation of adults and juveniles in D.C. Superior Court.

Judge Staples has worked as an assistant public defender and as a sole practitioner. He has tried dozens of cases in criminal and family courts. Judge Staples is a former co-chair of the Courts, Lawyers, and Administration of Justice Steering Committee of the D.C. Bar.

Judge Staples received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and graduated magna cum laude from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. Judge Staples served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Robert E. Morin on the D.C. Superior Court. Before law school, he served as a legislative assistant and assistant press secretary to Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr. in New York’s 19th congressional district.
