Nomination of the Honorable Rahkel Bouchet to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia

Monday, March 19, 2018

The District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (Commission) is pleased to announce the nomination of the Honorable Rahkel Bouchet to be an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, filling a judicial vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Frederick H. Weisberg.

On January 8, 2018, the Commission submitted to the President a list of three candidates for his consideration in selecting a nominee to fill this judicial vacancy. Pursuant to D.C. Code § 1-204.34(d)(1), the President must select a nominee within 60 days. If the President does not do so, the Commission is required to nominate one of the three candidates it had recommended to the President, and, with the advice and consent of the Senate, appoint that person to fill the vacancy. The deadline for making a nomination for this judicial vacancy was March 9, 2018. The President has not made a nomination, and so the Commission chose a nominee. On March 19, 2018, the Commission transmitted its nomination of Judge Bouchet to the United States Senate.

Judge Bouchet serves as a Magistrate Judge in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.  Prior to her 2016 appointment, Judge Bouchet, in 2008, formed a private litigation practice and litigated criminal and family matters in the District of Columbia metropolitan area. In 2013, while maintaining her private practice, Judge Bouchet joined the faculty at Howard University School of Law as the Supervising Attorney of the Child Welfare and Family Justice Clinic. Judge Bouchet is an active member of the community and has served on boards with several community organizations, including the National Bar Association and the Howard University Alumni Association. Judge Bouchet received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Howard University, and her Juris Doctor degree from the Howard University School of Law, where she was a founding member of the Trial Advocacy Moot Court Team.
