Notice of Judicial Vacancy on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia

Thursday, April 14, 2022

Members of the bench, bar, and public are hereby notified by the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (the “Commission”) that a vacancy on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia will occur as a result of the retirement of the Honorable Fern Flanagan Saddler, effective April 22, 2022. The Commission invites qualified individuals to apply for this vacancy by 12 pm on Monday, May 2, 2022. See D.C. Code §§ 1-204.31, 1-204.33. Due to the Commission’s June 21, 2022, deadline for recommending applicants to the President of the United States, the Commission encourages applicants to apply as soon as possible for this vacancy. Application materials, including instructions, are available on the Commission’s website: jnc.dc.gov.

Individuals who applied by the March 31, 2022, deadline for the vacancies of Judges William M. Jackson and Gerald I. Fisher need only submit a Letter of Interest and JNC Form 21A; these applicants need not submit the additional forms requested on Form 21A.

All other persons interested in applying for the judicial vacancy created by Judge Saddler’s retirement shall review and comply with the application instructions on the Commission’s website. Application materials may be submitted by hard copy, or they may be submitted electronically using a secure portal, available on the Commission’s website at: jnc.dc.gov. Because the Commission’s office is primarily operating remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic, electronic submission is highly encouraged to ensure that application materials are timely received. While the Commission’s staff will be able to confirm receipt of application materials, electronic submission will facilitate its ability to promptly notify applicants of any missing or otherwise incomplete materials.

If submitting materials by hard copy, applicants shall submit both an original and a paper copy of their complete application materials to the Commission. All hard copy application materials and correspondence shall be addressed to:  Judicial Nomination Commission, 515 Fifth Street, NW, Suite 235, Washington, DC 20001. Do not email application materials to the Commission or individual Commission members.

All application materials must be received no later than 12 pm on May 2, 2022. Please note that the JNC Form 21, Applicant Questionnaire, and IRS Form 14767 were recently revised. All applications must be submitted using the February 2022 JNC Form 21. Late, incomplete, or outdated application materials will not be considered!

In May 2020, the Commission provided notice of amendments to its application requirements due to COVID-19. These amendments remain in effect and can be found in the JNC Form 20 Application Instructions.

The Commission does not require letters of recommendation, letters of support, or endorsements, but it will accept them. The Commission must receive such letters no later than 5pm on Monday, May 16, 2022. Consult the application instructions on the Commission’s website for additional information on the procedures for submitting letters.

Questions concerning the application process for these judicial vacancies shall be directed to the Commission at (202) 879-0478 or [email protected]
